Shaheen Shah Afridi has been appointed as the ODI Captain of Pakistan

In a significant move aimed at building for the long term, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) today announced the appointment of pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi as the national One Day International (ODI) captain. The decision, which follows an internal review of the team's recent white-ball performances, sees Afridi replace wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan.

The official confirmation came after a high-level meeting in Islamabad attended by white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, Director of High Performance Aqib Javed, and members of the national selection committee. Afridi, who has previously led the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars to successive titles, is expected to bring a fresh, aggressive perspective to the 50-over side.

Afridi's first major assignment will be a three-match home series against South Africa, scheduled from November 4 to 8 at Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.

A whirlwind year of captaincy changes

Afridi's appointment marks another chapter in what has been a tumultuous year for Pakistan's white-ball leadership.

Early 2024: Following Pakistan's poor showing at the ODI World Cup in 2023, the PCB's previous regime appointed Afridi as T20I captain. However, his tenure was short-lived, and he was removed after a series loss to New Zealand.

Mid-2024: The board reinstated Babar Azam as the white-ball captain.

After the T20 World Cup: Babar Azam stepped down from the captaincy following another disappointing tournament performance, with Mohammad Rizwan subsequently taking over.

October 2025: After a disappointing run under Rizwan, the PCB reviewed its leadership structure once more, culminating in today's announcement.

Strategic alignment for the 2027 World Cup

Head coach Mike Hesson is reportedly a strong advocate for Afridi, viewing him as a key part of the team's long-term strategy for the 2027 World Cup. The PCB hopes Afridi's proven leadership qualities in the PSL, combined with his formidable bowling prowess, will provide the stability and direction the national team has lacked.

Afridi now faces the significant challenge of stabilizing a team that has seen frequent leadership changes. With high expectations from fans, his tenure will be closely scrutinized as he attempts to lead Pakistan back to consistent success on the global stage.
