Mumbai,India—In a convergence of cricketing milestones, Indian veteran Dinesh Karthik has been appointed captain of Team India for the Hong Kong Sixes, just as Nepali legend Sharad Vesawkar prepares to lead his country in his final international appearance at the same tournament. The three-day six-a-side tournament is set to electrify the Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground from November 7–9.
Karthik's comeback to captaincy
Following his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket in 2024 and a successful stint as a coach, Dinesh Karthik will swap the dugout for the pitch. The 40-year-old, known for his explosive batting and sharp leadership, was announced as India's skipper by Cricket Hong Kong, China, in late September.
Karthik will join forces with fellow retiree Ravichandran Ashwin in a formidable lineup. Having exited in the group stage last year under Robin Uthappa, India will be seeking redemption in the fast-paced format. In a media release, Karthik expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "It is an absolute honour leading Team India at the Hong Kong Sixes… we will aim to bring joy to the fans and play cricket that is both fearless and entertaining".
A hero's farewell for Vesawkar
For Nepal, the tournament marks a significant farewell as Sharad Vesawkar, a legend of Nepali cricket, will lead his country one last time. The final appearance for the iconic middle-order batsman and off-spinner comes after announcing his retirement from international cricket in October 2025.
Vesawkar's career spans back to his senior debut in 2004, and he was a pivotal player in Nepal's first-ever ICC T20 World Cup appearance in 2014, known for his clutch performances. His retirement was met with tributes from the cricketing community, recognizing his immense contributions to the sport in Nepal.
A tournament of talent and farewells
The Hong Kong Sixes 2025 is shaping up to be an unmissable event, with the inclusion of former stars adding a layer of nostalgia and intense competition. The clash of experience, leadership, and emotional farewells will ensure a memorable celebration of cricket in one of its most exciting formats.
