Healy: Perth Test Will Define Ashes Outcome; Predicts 3-1 Loss For England If They Stumble

SYDNEY — Former Australian wicketkeeper and cricket legend Ian Healy has delivered a stark warning to the English team ahead of the upcoming Ashes series, labeling the opening Test in Perth as the key to the entire tour. Speaking on SENQ Breakfast, Healy predicted a tight series, possibly ending in a 2–2 draw, but only if England can secure a win at Optus Stadium. However, he cautioned that a loss in the crucial first match would likely lead to a 3–1 series defeat.

Healy's predictions come as England prepares to face Australia with minimal red-ball match practice, a factor he believes leaves them dangerously underprepared for the Australian conditions.

Warning from an ODI

Healy highlighted Australia's recent One Day International (ODI) against India in Perth as a cautionary tale for England. "I hope England watch it," he said, recalling how the swinging and bouncing Perth pitch exposed the "underdone" Indian batsmen, leading to reckless shots and easy dismissals. "England, watch out, you're doing the same thing".

He contrasted this with the Australian fast bowlers, whom he described as looking "fresh and sharp" during the ODI, ready to exploit England's lack of preparation.

Key factors in Healy's prediction

Underprepared England: England's limited build-up for the Ashes, with only one warm-up match scheduled before the first Test on November 21, is a significant concern for Healy.

Perth's "crucial" role: The former wicketkeeper emphasized the psychological importance of the series opener. A win would bolster England's morale and increase their chances of a draw, but a defeat would give Australia a decisive mental edge.

Aussie fast bowlers: The freshness of Australia's pace attack, combined with the challenging conditions in Perth, will put immense pressure on England's top order from the start.

Marnus Labuschagne's return to form: Healy also praised Marnus Labuschagne's recent form, advocating for him to open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja. Labuschagne has scored four centuries in five domestic matches, signaling a strong return to form that could further strengthen Australia's batting lineup.

The Ashes begin November 21 in Perth. Healy's bold prediction adds another layer of intrigue to an Ashes series already full of anticipation, with England's preparation and performance in Perth set to be under intense scrutiny
