Zampa, Connolly lead Australia to series victory over India

Australia clinched an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against India on Thursday with a tense two-wicket victory in Adelaide. Rookie batsman Cooper Connolly held his nerve with an unbeaten 61 to guide the home side to victory after a late collapse, supported by an anchor innings of 74 from Matthew Short. Adam Zampa was instrumental with the ball, earning Player of the Match honors for his four-wicket haul.

Early breakthrough sets the tone

After winning the toss and electing to field, Australia's bowlers put the pressure on India early. Fast bowler Xavier Bartlett, brought into the side for the rested Nathan Ellis, made a strong impression by dismissing Indian skipper Shubman Gill and the veteran Virat Kohli for consecutive ducks—a first in Kohli's illustrious ODI career.

India builds a competitive total

Despite the early setback, a resilient 118-run partnership between Rohit Sharma (73) and Shreyas Iyer (61) steadied India's innings. However, India's momentum stalled in the middle overs as leg-spinner Adam Zampa tore through the batting lineup. His scalps included Iyer, KL Rahul, and Axar Patel, ultimately finishing with figures of 4 for 60. A late surge from the tail-enders pushed India's final total to 9 for 264.

Australia's chase anchored by youth

In their chase of 265, Australia relied on their inexperienced talent. Matthew Short, who was dropped twice, crafted a composed 74 to set a solid foundation. After Short's dismissal, 21-year-old Cooper Connolly and the explosive Mitchell Owen (36 off 23 balls) took over, putting on a rapid 59-run partnership.

Connolly closes out the series

A dramatic late twist saw Australia lose three quick wickets, but Connolly's maturity shone through. Despite losing partners, he remained calm under pressure, hitting his maiden ODI half-century and steering his side across the finish line with 22 balls to spare. The victory seals the series for Australia ahead of the final dead-rubber match in Sydney.
