Ashes on the line as Smith takes control of batting order for NSW return

SYDNEY — Star batsman Steve Smith is set to make a rare return to the Sheffield Shield, and New South Wales (NSW) captain Jack Edwards has revealed that Smith will likely "bat where he wants" as he prepares for the Ashes. The unconventional arrangement highlights the high stakes as Smith eyes a shift in his position ahead of the pivotal five-Test series against England.

The decision has thrust Smith's batting placement into the spotlight, with potential Ashes implications at stake.

Position and influence

Edwards, who will have "very little say" in the matter, suggested that Smith's preference and the Australian national team's strategy will determine his spot in the lineup.

The announcement revives long-standing debates about Smith moving up to the number three position, a role he excelled in before. Smith has spent most of 2024 at number four, a spot assumed by Kurtis Patterson in the recent Shield season.

A return to number three for the Ashes could facilitate Cameron Green moving to the number four spot, a position many believe better suits his all-round game.

Smith's low-key preparation

After a two-month sabbatical in New York, Smith has returned to Australia with a "less-is-more" approach to his pre-Ashes preparation. Instead of relentless training, his focus is on mental freshness.

"It takes me two hits to get sorted. I feel like I'm ready to go now," Smith told reporters, downplaying the effects of his break.

He is scheduled to play two Sheffield Shield matches for NSW—against Queensland at the Gabba and Victoria at the SCG—before the first Ashes Test in Perth on November 21.

Mentor role for Konstas

In addition to focusing on his own form, Smith has offered to mentor young opener Sam Konstas, who has been struggling for form.

"My door's always open, my phone's always on," Smith said, noting his willingness to offer advice to his teammate.

While offering support, Smith emphasized that young players must ultimately forge their own paths, just as he did early in his career.

The upcoming Shield matches will offer a sneak peek into Australia's potential batting order as the national team prepares to reclaim the Ashes. All eyes will be on Smith to see where he decides to line up for NSW.
